Panthers take home T20 Premiership

It was déjà vu in the Premier Women’s First XI T20 decider, with rain seeing Dandenong crowned premiers having finished the home-and-away season on top of the ladder.

After all 20 overs were completed in the Panthers batting innings the rain started tumbling down during the innings break at Ringwood’s Jubilee Park.

Whilst at times it looked like the rain had stopped, it kept persisting and forced proceedings to come to a premature end at Russell Lucas Oval.

Before the rain came, the Panthers elected to bat first after winning the toss, opening with Victoria captain Nicole Faltum and Jessica Matin.

WBBL premiership player Faltum showed her class at the start of the Panthers innings, scoring 44 runs off 33 balls which included six boundaries.

Matin, alongside the Panthers top and middle order batters, were unable to produce similar totals which saw them collapse from 1-41 to 6-82 at one stage.

Jessica Bohn and Vanchica Pathania’s partnership then helped boost Dandenong’s total to 7-106 off their 20 overs.

With no further play taking place after that, fans were unable to see ex-Australian captain Meg Lanning bat for the first time in Mustangs colours since the 2019-20 season.

The final concluded what was a tight T20 competition which saw each team pick up at least one win throughout the season.

Box Hill were the first through to the Grand Final whilst Dandenong booked their spot and jumped to the top of the table after defeating Essendon Maribyrnong Park in the final round.

Three other teams, Carlton, Melbourne and Geelong, were also in with a shot to making the decider heading into the final round of the season.

Melbourne’s Rhiann O’Donnell was the competition's leading run-scorer. The former Renegade scored 228 runs, finishing 41 runs ahead of EMP opener Makinley Blows.

Carlton’s Katia Jomini would finish as the leading wicket taker in the competition. Jomini’s 10 wicket season saw her finish one wicket ahead of Box Hill’s Emilia Wilson and Plenty Valley’s Rebeka Vandot.
